My first Jesmyn Ward book and this was a wild ride… literally đź¤. Getting to know these characters had me going through several different emotions from anger to sadness to deep concern. Leonie frustrated me quite a bit but it was clear that she was weighed down by a toxic relationship, family tragedy, and addiction. It was getting the best of her, especially as a mother. I loved the bond between Jojo and his little sister. His protection over her was deep and she truly adored him. The trip to Parchman, the presence of Given and Ritchie, and the story of what unfolded with Pop…. had me locked in and speechless. Can’t wait to pick up other books by Jesmyn.
